Hi, I’m Dana — and I’m not interested in turning midlife into another full-time job.

I’m Dana Whitmore, a 52-year-old lifestyle writer in Richmond, Virginia. Midlifely is for women who have reached the point where several things seem to be changing at once — sleep, energy, skin, clothes, work, friendships, the house, the family calendar — and would like useful information without being told to reinvent themselves.

My mid-forties did not arrive as one dramatic “before and after.” They were more like twenty small tabs opening at the same time.

I started waking up at hours when nobody should have opinions. My energy became less predictable. Clothes I had worn for years stopped feeling like mine. My youngest left for college. A few friendships drifted because nobody had the bandwidth to keep saying “we should get together.” And at 46, after years in corporate communications, I left a job that had become too big for the life I wanted and built a smaller freelance writing business.

That combination taught me the question I use all over this site:

Is this actually worth the energy it takes?

A seven-step skincare routine may be excellent and still be wrong for someone who will only do three steps. A home reset can be beautiful and still leave you with six new storage systems to maintain. A career change can be right and still need a slower financial runway than an inspirational Instagram post suggests.

So when I write about something here, I care about the part that usually disappears after the headline:

how much time it takes

what it costs

how much upkeep it creates

whether there is a simpler version

what realistically changes

what it will not fix

That applies to almost everything on Midlifely: sleep routines, skincare, wardrobes, friendships, home projects, career shifts, and the strange logistics of a house after children move out.

A very important limit

I am not a doctor, nurse, dietitian, therapist, dermatologist, menopause practitioner, financial adviser, or career coach. My health-adjacent writing is based on lived experience, practical lifestyle observations, and clearly distinguished general information — not diagnosis or treatment.

Perimenopause, persistent fatigue, significant sleep changes, unexplained weight changes, skin concerns, or anything else that worries you deserves an actual clinician when appropriate. I will never tell you to balance your hormones, reset your metabolism, detox anything, stop medication, or treat a symptom with a supplement stack.

The medical pages can tell you what is clinically known. I want Midlifely to help with the other half of the question: what is it like to live with a change on an ordinary Tuesday, and what makes daily life easier without creating another project?

What you’ll find here

Midlife sleep problems: the routines, bedroom changes, experiments, and limits of lifestyle tinkering — without pretending every 3 a.m. wake-up has the same cause.

Energy and fatigue after 40: ways to reduce friction, rethink schedules, and work with lower-energy days, alongside clear reminders that persistent or unexplained fatigue belongs with a clinician.

Midlife weight changes: body-neutral conversations about fit, comfort, routines, and changing proportions — not “get your old body back” plans.

Perimenopause: lived experience, symptom tracking, appointment preparation, and practical day-to-day adjustments. No diagnosis engine and no treatment prescriptions.

Skincare: routines I will actually keep doing, products I finish rather than merely photograph, and an ongoing preference for fewer steps when fewer steps work.

Style after 40: clothes for the body and life you have now, without age rules or instructions to look younger.

Empty-nest life: the freedom, grief, quiet, changed routines, and unexpectedly large grocery shop the week after nobody is home to eat it.

Friendships: making the first move, recurring plans, friendship drift, and the fact that adult friendship often grows through repetition rather than instant chemistry.

Career change: what it felt like to leave a stable professional identity in my forties, test a new direction, send the first awkward freelance invoice, and build something smaller on purpose.

Home resets: making rooms work for the life happening now — not turning decluttering into a moral test.

If a solution makes midlife more complicated than the problem it was supposed to solve, I want to know that before you spend the money.
